Who Is Gogmazios and Why Is It Dangerous?

Gogmazios is a Wyrm-type Elder Dragon that returned from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, fully reimagined for Wilds' living-world engine. It is an oil-and-fire creature that secretes a viscous black petroleum from its body, laying oil traps across the arena before igniting them with its Drill Beam breath attack. The combination of area denial, massive HP pool, and high-damage fire attacks makes it the most technical fight in TU4.

Before entering the hunt, equip Fire Resistance decorations and bring Fireproof Mantle. Its oil pools deal Fire damage on contact and apply Oil Blight, which dramatically increases the damage you take from fire attacks. Oil Blight can be cured by rolling repeatedly or by using a Blight Negation item.

Gogmazios Attack Patterns: Every Move Explained

Oil Slick: Gogmazios crouches and sweeps its tail, depositing oil across a 180-degree arc. Dodge through the sweep animation, not away from it. Drill Beam: Its most dangerous attack. Gogmazios rears up, chest glowing orange. The beam tracks your position for 3 seconds before firing. To interrupt: attack the chest Wound (if open) during the charge-up. If no Wound is open, run perpendicular to the dragon, not away from it. Tail Slam: A telegraphed downward slam. Fast roll to its side on the wind-up animation.

Phase 2 (below 40% HP): Gogmazios ignites all existing oil pools simultaneously, dramatically changing the arena layout. Its Drill Beam gains a spread pattern that covers the full arena in Phase 2. Position yourself on the north side of the arena where oil pools are thinnest at the start of the hunt — this gives you the cleanest runway during Phase 2.

Best Builds for Gogmazios

Thunder Longsword build: Elemental Attack Boost (Thunder) 5, Weakness Exploit 3, Critical Eye 3, Critical Boost 3, Flinch Free 1. Use the Lv3 Brazen Bull longsword for highest Thunder damage output. Land Spirit Helm Breaker on exposed Wounds for massive burst. This is the optimal solo build.

Blast Dual Blades build: Blast Attack 3, Agitator 5, Weakness Exploit 3, Speed Sharpening 1, Blight Resistance 3. Blight Resistance 3 is mandatory — it makes you immune to Oil Blight, removing the oil slick danger entirely. The Blast procs on Gogmazios trigger stagger reactions that give your team free hit windows.

Optimal Team Composition for Multiplayer

The optimal 4-player team: 2x Blast Dual Blades (constant Blast procs stagger the monster repeatedly), 1x Thunder Insect Glaive (airtime lets you avoid most oil pools while dealing continuous damage), 1x Support Hunting Horn with Gogmazios Melody set (reduces team's fire damage taken by 30%). This composition handles Phase 2's ignition event with minimal panic and clears reliably under 10 minutes.
