The news broke on May 18, 2026, after Polish publication Bankier flagged new regulatory filings from CI Games. According to those filings, the Polish developer has been "released from its obligations under the binding agreement," and the termination was described as "conditional in nature." The game is still on track for a 2026 release across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

As reported by Kotaku and Eurogamer, CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski had previously praised Epic as "an incredible partner" when the exclusivity deal was announced. The termination represents a notable reversal — and a significant win for the large portion of PC players who exclusively use Steam.

Why Did CI Games and Epic Terminate the Deal?

The specific reasons behind the termination have not been publicly disclosed by either party. However, the timing is telling. Epic Games has faced mounting challenges with its store strategy in recent years, and several developers have renegotiated or ended exclusivity arrangements as the Epic Games Store has struggled to close the gap with Steam in terms of active users and feature parity.

For CI Games, opening up distribution makes financial sense. The first Lords of the Fallen (2023) sold 2.5 million copies on its way to profitability, with CI Games confirming a total development and marketing budget of 298 million Polish złoty — approximately $80 million at current exchange rates. The sequel needs to clear a comparable or higher bar, and locking PC sales to a single storefront with lower traffic would be a calculated risk, not a certainty.

Distribution for Lords of the Fallen 2 is also being handled by Plaion (known as Deep Silver), which is responsible for global marketing and physical product shipments. That partnership likely adds another layer of commercial consideration favoring broader platform availability rather than single-store exclusivity.

When Will Lords of the Fallen 2 Actually Release?

CI Games has confirmed Lords of the Fallen 2 remains the studio's top priority and is still targeting a 2026 launch. A release date window of August 2026 was reportedly leaked by a game designer at CI Games, though the studio has not officially confirmed a specific month. Developer Hexworks — the same team that built the 2023 reboot — is working on the sequel, which aims to attract a broader audience through more commercially accessible visual design while retaining the challenging soulslike gameplay.

The game is expected to make a notable appearance at summer 2026 events, including Summer Game Fest and potentially Sony or Microsoft's dedicated showcases.
