Dungeons & Dragons Action Game Cancelled by Hasbro
Hasbro has cancelled Giant Skull's Dungeons & Dragons action game less than a year after its announcement — and the studio is already hunting for a new publisher.
- Hasbro has cancelled the single-player Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure game being developed by Giant Skull, the studio led by Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen.
- The cancellation came less than a year after the game was announced in June 2025, with Wizards of the Coast citing an 'early concept' decision.
- Giant Skull is now seeking a new publishing deal and remains in talks with both Wizards of the Coast and other potential partners.
What Happened to the Dungeons & Dragons Game from the Star Wars Jedi Director?
Hasbro has cancelled the Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure game being developed by Giant Skull, the studio founded by Stig Asmussen — director of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The cancellation was first reported by Bloomberg on May 19, 2026, and confirmed by both Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull.
The project had only been publicly announced in June 2025, making this cancellation less than a year after its reveal. According to Eurogamer, Hasbro pulled the publishing plug at some point earlier in 2026, cutting short what had appeared to be a promising partnership.
As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, Wizards of the Coast confirmed the news while expressing continued goodwill towards Asmussen's team. A Wizards of the Coast spokesperson stated: "While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship."
Why Did Hasbro Cancel the D&D Game So Soon After Announcing It?
Wizards of the Coast confirmed the cancellation came as part of a broader reorganisation within the company — one that also included the closure of its subsidiary studio Atomic Arcade. The D&D game from Giant Skull was described as an "early concept," suggesting the project never made it past initial pitching and pre-production stages before Hasbro decided to cut funding.
The timing is particularly striking given Hasbro's own stated ambitions. In April 2024, following the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, Hasbro's Eugene Evans had publicly declared that the company was "talking to lots of partners" about the future of the Dungeons & Dragons game franchise. Giant Skull appeared to be exactly the kind of high-pedigree developer Hasbro had been courting.
Giant Skull was formed in 2024 with a clear mandate: create a "AAA single-player focused action adventure" game using Unreal Engine 5. Asmussen's track record at Respawn Entertainment — having directed two critically acclaimed entries in the Star Wars Jedi series — made him one of the most credible hires Hasbro could have made for this type of project. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor received a perfect score from VGC, calling it a "thrilling adventure with a stellar cast."
What Is Giant Skull Doing Now After the D&D Cancellation?
Despite the setback, Asmussen struck a confident tone when speaking to Bloomberg. "Things are good at Giant Skull," he said, adding that the studio remains in active talks with Wizards of the Coast about new pitches, as well as exploring other potential publishing deals. Wizards of the Coast confirmed it is still open to receiving pitches from the studio.
This means the D&D universe is still a possibility for Giant Skull, even if the original concept is dead. For fans of Asmussen's work on the Jedi series, the hope remains that the studio will land a new deal — whether inside the D&D universe or in a completely new IP — and deliver the kind of single-player action experience they are built for.
Giant Skull, the studio behind the cancelled D&D game, was founded by Stig Asmussen specifically to make AAA single-player action-adventure games. Despite the Hasbro cancellation, the studio is actively seeking a new publishing partner and has not ruled out returning to the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
